Key Stage 5
Didcot Sixth Form, a co-educational sixth form shared with St Birinus School, provides a ‘gold standard’ A-Level curriculum offer Key Stage 5, comprising 28 A-Level subjects, plus Core Mathematics and the Extended Project Qualification. South Oxfordshire has a range of high-quality vocational and technical providers, and for this reason we aim to be the academic sixth form of choice for those who seek an A-Level education.
This is complemented by an ambitious enrichment programme that provides outstanding experiences to students in the sixth form and sets students up for success in accessing ambitious destinations beyond sixth form.
The curriculum is ambitious both on a cohort and subject level. It is sequenced coherently, assessed intelligently and robustly, and extends to ambitious and effective independent work that is planned with the same care and precision as the taught curriculum. Students receive 9 hours of taught lessons per fortnight, other than in those subjects with very small numbers of students, and an additional five hours per subject, per week, on specific and directed independent work.
There is deliberate, planned transition from KS4 to KS5. Many teachers are involved with both key stages, and signpost and challenge how students can look ahead and prepare for A Level study. Sixth form applicants receive a full week of induction and transition into the sixth form at the end of Year 11, including transition lessons taught by A Level subject specialist, which is preceded and followed by further independent transition work.
Dedicated KS5 subject leads in all larger subjects create the capacity and expertise to ensure continuous and iterative refinement to the curriculum
