Year 12 students attend Biology in Action conference

Posted on: 26/11/2024

We were lucky enough to visit the Biology In Action conference held at Warwick University this term. Despite the relatively early start, it quickly proved to be well worth it! We explored several topics relevant to cutting-edge biology such as astrobiology, white rhino conservation efforts and the causes of dementia, learning about the transmembrane protein APP and Tau tangles, Jupiter's potentially habitable moon (Europa), and how King Richard III's body was identified through mitochondrial DNA and a gene only found on the Y-chromosome. One of the speakers even had some shared experiences with Sir. David Attenborough! We definitely also recommend searching up an image of a methane worm. It was really interesting to see how they mixed in other subjects. For example, the session that we learnt about the history of Richard III, which made the biology topics even more engaging. Overall, it was a really enjoyable experience and one in which we could expand our biological knowledge outside of the classroom.
