Reflecting on International Day of the Girl

2022: “Our time is now- our rights, our future”
October 11th is the 10th International Day of the Girl, a day that brings girls together to raise their voices against the inequality that still exists in society today. On international day of the girl we stand together to bring more opportunities of jobs in leading positions and higher education to girls who may not have the resources or a supportive community to help them flourish. By raising our voices, we can help to fight this time-long issue of inequality. “Our time is now- our rights, our future” is this year’s theme and to raise money this October, Plan International is asking you to step up. By walking 10,000 steps a day (or any other way you prefer) you can raise money to help tackle this vital issue so that all girls can one day have a seat at the table.
Whilst it may seem otherwise, many girls are still not able to access an education due to oppression in their countries. Some bleak examples of this are Afghanistan and Iran; in Afghanistan girls are not allowed to go to school or have jobs and often face prominent levels of violence. Similarly in Iran whilst at least allowed a secondary education, girls are prohibited from further education and jobs. Infact women in Iran are currently protesting against the government for more women’s rights, a movement sparked from the brutal killing of Mahsa Amini by the police. International day of the girl is all about raising awareness and reminding us that inequality still exists in many places around the world. Their funds go towards helping girls in places like these get the rights and opportunities they most certainly deserve.
