U16 football team qualify for next round of EFSA cup
Posted on: 21/09/2021The Under 16 football team secured their place in the second round of the ESFA national cup following a 5-3 goal-fest against a strong King Alfred's Academy side.
The team haven't played together for 2 seasons, and it took the first 20 minutes to settle into the game. KAs took advantage of our unease and pounced on a loose ball to give them the lead.
DGS reacted immediately and created lots of opportunities but were denied by some outstanding goalkeeping.
It was Linda who opened DGS goal scoring account: a through-ball from Amelia found Linda's feet and she lobbed at the goalkeeper in the most spectacular fashion.
Then, DGS really found their momentum; we shifted the midfield around and this allowed us to dominate across the pitch. Linda soon got her second of the afternoon with another cheeky lob rippling the back of the net.
Our goal tally was added to as Lily Black pinged an in-swinging corner which was met by Grace Beardsley who coolly finished with her left foot.
The team were happy to be on top at half time but knew their work was far from done.
We kicked off the second half increasing our attacking pressure and it wasn't long before we were awarded a penalty for a clear foul in the box. Daisy stepped up and powered the ball in to increase our lead to 4-1
As fatigue started to kick in, the team had a 10-minute lapse in concentration and shape. KAs scored twice in quick succession to make it 4-3. This was the wakeup call the team needed, they soon regrouped and it was Lily Black who bagged our 5th as she dribbled around the defence before slotting it home.
A fantastic 5-3 win on a warm afternoon now sees DGS into the hat for round 2 of the national cup.
