There is a good reason why respect is one of our core school values. The strength of our community is at the heart of our school and the way we treat each other is fundamental to that sense of community spirit.
I am always struck by the kind and polite way in which students thank teachers at the end of each lesson at this school. This does not happen as a matter of routine in every school and I am proud of our culture of respect and kindness as we work hard to acknowledge the efforts made by everyone in our community on a daily basis. Taking the time to notice and show gratitude for the things others do for us each day is crucial and we often forget how powerful a heartfelt thank you can be. It can be easier to be critical or to see the faults in those around us but finding time to be positive and demonstrate genuine respect for the kind actions of others in our community is well worth it.
As a new school year starts it is well worth taking a moment to acknowledge the ways in which we can be respectful to others. This includes accepting and celebrating difference. A healthy respect for those who challenge you and may not agree with you is just as important as those friendships where you are of similar mind on many things. Communities would be very dull places if everyone were the same!
Respect for others is crucial but respect for yourself is just as important. Let this year be the year that we all take a moment to respect ourselves and feel pride in who we are as an individual and what we have achieved.
Respect yourself for all that you bring to our school community. You are hugely valued.
